FAQs related to graveyards and church grounds...

  • Does our insurance cover the graveyard?

Yes. If the graveyard is within the grounds of an active church, then it’s covered. If your church is also responsible for a graveyard that’s separate from the church grounds please let us know. Your policy covers you for damage to the boundary walls, railings, gates and pathways. It also covers you for liability if anyone is injured in the graveyard.
  • Vandals have damaged a gravestone. Can we claim?

Yes. You can put in a claim for any costs incurred in making gravestones safe after vandalism. You can claim for up to £1,500 in any one year.
  • The local council is responsible for the churchyard. One of the pavements is dangerous – can we just ignore it?

No. As you occupy the land you have a duty of care. If you know about a danger but don’t do anything about it you’re making yourselves liable. Let the council know about the problem by sending them a recorded delivery letter including all the details. You might also want to rope off the area until it’s repaired.
  • We’re having a bonfire display in the grounds of the church hall. Should we arrange some special insurance?

If you’re expecting fewer than 100 people, then your policy will cover you. If you’re expecting more than that, then you might need to extend your cover. Please call us on 0345 7773322 to find out more.

You should also carry out a risk assessment before the event and follow it closely. If it’s a large event, we strongly recommend using a professional fireworks display organiser. You can find out more about organising fireworks events here.
