Guide to sums insured

Ensuring you have adequate Home Insurance cover

We have designed our Home Insurance to provide generous cover limits so that most home owners do not need to worry about calculating their sums insured. We do this by making assumptions about the property value and home contents based on the number of bedrooms in your property and your post code amongst other factors.

Calculating the value of your home contents

Your contents sum insured is the total value of replacing your Home Contents should there be a total loss, for example in the event of a fire. It’s important that your sum insured is sufficient so we can quickly pay any claims you make. Our Home Contents Insurance is designed to provide the cover that most people need for their contents and possessions with up to £75,000 of cover.

This sum is more than enough for the average home.  However, we know some customers may have expensive or unusual items that need to be included or are just curious about the value of their home contents.

Calculating the value of your home buildings

Your rebuilding sum insured should represent the amount you would have to pay to build your home again should there be a total loss, for example in the event of a fire. But don’t forget it is the re-building value of your home, not the market value you need to insure for.  As with our contents cover our standard Buildings Insurance reduces the chance of under-insurance with up to £750,000 of cover.

You can find out more about calculating the value of your home contents and rebuilding cost on the Association of British Insurers website.

Remember, as with all household insurance policies, terms and conditions and minimum premiums apply. Please note, we may not be able to quote in some circumstances.
