SmartWater - policy condition
![]()
What you need to do
During 2008 we have applied a policy condition at each renewal to our Parishguard and Hallguard policies. This means if you haven't taken the following precautionary steps only half of each theft of metal claim will be paid up to a maximum of £5000 each year. Please check your policy document for the full details.
Put the external signs up straight away
The SmartWater kits we sent you in November 2007 contain an external sign and an internal poster. We recommend you put the signage up in a visible place as soon as possible, even before you apply the SmartWater product to your valuables and roofs. This is because the SmartWater logo is well known amongst criminals and the signage alone is a major deterrent.
We have been asked does displaying the sign highlight the fact that we have valuables and external metal - the answer is that displaying the signage proves that the church are actively protecting their property, making a prosecution and conviction more likely.
Because we’ve purchased a license on your behalf, you have the right to display the signage immediately.
Use the SmartWater sample
Your kit contains a 10ml bottle of SmartWater solution which is enough to coat sections of a small roof or internal valuables. It should be enough to mark the contents of a church. Only a small brush stroke on each section of metal is needed. Whilst the signs provide a deterrent, it is the product that actually secures convictions. Please ensure that you read and comply with the manufacturer’s instructions in full before using the sample.
It is very important that you complete and return your registration form to SmartWater (not to Ecclesiastical) as soon as you have applied the product. Registration forms should be returned to SmartWater Technology Limited, PO Box 136, Telford, TF3 3WY.
If you require further supplies of SmartWater, or additional signage, call The Churches Purchasing Scheme (CPS) Limited on 0845 458 4584 or visit www.cpsonline.co.uk. CPS are part of the Ecclesiastical group and source church related products. They can now provide you with additional supplies of SmartWater with a 45% discount.
Read the theft of metal guidance notes and contents of the SmartWater pack we sent you. We’ve outlined a range of measures you can take to combat lead roof theft, many of which are low or no cost options. Our team of specialist risk surveyors have combined their knowledge, gained from working closely with the Church of England over many years, to bring you the best and most up-to-date advice.
