guide to sums insured
Ensuring you have adequate home insurance cover
We have designed our home insurance to provide generous cover limits so that most home owners do not need to worry about calculating their sums insured. We do this by making assumptions about the property value and home contents based on the number of bedrooms in your property and your post code amongst other factors.
Calculating the value of your home contents
Your contents sum insured is the total value of replacing your home contents should there be a total loss, for example in the event of a fire. It’s important that your sum insured is sufficient so we can quickly pay any claims you make. Our home contents insurance is designed to provide the cover that most people need for their contents and possessions with up to £60,000 of cover.
Check you’re covered with our home contents value calculator.
Calculating the value of your home buildings
Your rebuilding sum insured should represent the amount you would have to pay to build your home again should there be a total loss, for example in the event of a fire. But don’t forget it is the re-building value of your home, not the market value you need to insure for. As with our contents cover our home buildings insurance reduces the chance of under-insurance with up to £500,000 of cover.
However, if you have an old or unusual property or more than 5 bedrooms you may need additional cover. If you have doubts about whether you are adequately covered or would like personal advice just give us a call on 0845 777 3322 (8am to 6pm weekdays).
