Theft of metal – a persistent problem

As a leading insurer of historic heritage properties, Ecclesiastical has seen an increase in the theft of metals from insured premises.

Since the start of 2007 we have received more than 7000 claims for metal theft, at an estimated total cost of almost £23 Million. Whilst a lot of these claims relate to church property, other sectors such as education, charity and care, are also being targeted.

Putting aside the irreplaceable loss of the nation’s heritage, thieves are also causing damage to stonework during the course of the theft, as well as damage to internal furnishings if rainwater leaks occur before the metal theft is discovered.

Our team of specialist surveyors have prepared a set of guidance notes - theft of metal outlining a variety of measures you can take to protect your building from metal theft.
