External Communications Manager (1941)

About the role

Based in our Gloucester office and reporting into the Group Head of Public Relations, you will play a vital role in managing the reputation of our business. You will promote and protect the organisation through integrated and creative external communications campaigns, as well as providing a daily press office service. In addition, you will play a vital role in developing and managing campaigns, media handling, messaging and creating content to support thought leadership, including a significant use of digital. 
 
While our business is insurance, you will develop and manage communications plans for customer sectors that include heritage, high net worth, charity, education, insurance brokers, real estate and the faith market. You will network across the business and provide communications counsel to senior internal stakeholders, as well as being a spokesperson for the business.

Key accountabilities

  • Developing and delivering integrated external communications plans for sectors throughout the business
  • Providing a proactive and reactive press office service
  • Developing productive relationships with journalists across a range of sectors
  • Developing strong relationships with stakeholders throughout the business
  • Crafting news-driven content that includes press releases, digital content and editorial
  • Providing media handling advice to senior stakeholders
  • Briefing and chaperoning senior spokespeople during media interviews
  • Making a significant contribution to the team’s objective of achieving a measurable increase in awareness
  • Managing the media training programme across the business 
  • Attending media interviews and press meetings in London

The Person

  • Degree qualified with analytical abilities
  • Proven PR experience, A flexible approach to working on different projects and situations
  • Highly articulate. Capable of inspiring confidence in internal stakeholders and peers
  • A motivated and creative team player with lots of drive and the ability to get things done
  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail

Knowledge, skills and experience

  • An experienced PR practitioner, ideally with experience in a financial services or professional services background (but not essential) Experienced at proactive and reactive press handling and positioning of key stakeholders in the wider media
  • An excellent network of journalists across all media
  • Strong written skills, capable of adapting to consumer as well as B2B audiences and across channels
  • Experience of using digital channels to generate earned media
  • Excellent verbal communication and presentation skills
  • Experience in building and maintaining relationships with senior stakeholders
  • A good understanding of financial services
  • Must be able to attend media interviews and press meetings in London
