About the role

The role holder will lead the efficient delivery of all IT application and systems development activity across new and legacy systems.
 
Ecclesiastical are at the start of a large transformational programme for the UK and Irish General Insurance part of the business.  The Horizon programme is looking to replace Ecclesiastical’s core General Insurance policy, claims, billing and workflow system and adapt the operating model to better align the business to the current and future needs of the customer.  There is an emphasis on becoming a more data driven organisation and as a result we will be looking to improve the quality, governance and controls of system data and the efficiency of reporting and analytics capability.

Key accountabilities

  • Lead and manage the software development teams to deliver applications and solutions to a required standards (.net, Java, web products, Insurance policy administration systems, integration solutions)
  • Accountable for the on-time and quality delivery of software development projects
  • Work effectively with Key Stakeholders and Product Owners to ensure delivery against agreed priorities
  • Work closely with Key Stakeholders and Product Owners to meet current and future user needs
  • Work closely with Architecture, Business Analysis, Data Management and Quality Assurance functions within Business Solutions
  • Ensure delivery processes are optimised, continually improved and consistent across the team
  • Ensure the code-base is created and maintained to a high quality by adopting and promoting best development practices, ensuring required documentation and controls exist
  • Ensure effective unit testing mechanisms are in place to provide software solutions that are free from defects
  • Make sure applications meet security standards
  • Implement mechanisms to monitor, manage and provide progress on all software development activities
  • Managing the interpretation of business or customer requirements into development specifications
  • Managing the development team, their priorities and their schedules
  • Oversee the creation of accurate work estimates and contribute to the demand and capacity management processes
  • Identify new and innovative technology solutions to improve application development and delivery

Knowledge, skills and experience

  • Proven experience in managing software development teams
  • Demonstrable and substantial experience in leading and managing teams of software developers 
  • The ability to drive the strategic direction of our products & services taking into account emerging and legacy technologies 
  • Proven experience of delivering greenfield systems development projects
  • A track record of driving team performance through personal hands on development experience
  • Proven ability to manage multiple developments to time and budget to enable business requirements
