Bad weather damages school playing fields and sports pavilion

The customer is one of the oldest schools in the country and considered a centre of educational excellence. In recent years the campus has been transformed with the acquisition of adjoining premises to house a Sixth Form Centre and the addition of a sports centre.

Winds cause havoc

Storms and gale force winds wreaked havoc across the open playing fields of the school and adjoining sports pavilion. The sports field is very exposed and the high winds caused extensive damage to:

  • Cricket screens

  • Nets

  • and supporting metal poles.

A mobile cricket score box was completely blown over and damaged beyond repair.

The initial damage was assessed at £27,000.

Our response

It was quite clear from the outset that the damage was weather related and consistent with other damage and claims we received from the area at the time of the incident. The most pressing issue was to settle the claim as quickly as possible so that the school could acquire or replace equipment in good time for the following season.

The question of replacement or repair needed to be addressed.

Cricket netting is easily replaced but ‘cricket nets’ are not portable - we called in Specialist Contractors to repair and make good.

The cricket screens and mobile scoring box were damaged beyond repair - a cash settlement was the most convenient way for the school to source replacements.

Our prompt action and flexible settlement arrangements ensured the impact on the school life was kept to a minimum and the season started on time.
