Don’t fall victim to the bends

According to the Government’s Health and Safety Executive, 38% of all injuries lasting for over three days are a result of manual loading – transporting or supporting an object by bodily force. It could be a particularly heavy load, or it could be one which is an awkward shape.

The Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 are the particular piece of legislation to which care homes should pay attention. The regulations stipulate that employers, including care homes, have a duty of care to assess the risks posed by manual handling, just as they would any other health and safety hazard.

Some steps you should follow to manage your manual handling risk:

  • Make sure each individual has an up to date care plan

  • Carry out a risk assessment and review

  • Try to eliminate manual handling where possible

  • Provide staff training

  • Keep accurate and up to date records which should be readily available to all staff
