Response

Planning evacuation procedures and assessing and stabilising the situation

Disaster response plan

This covers procedures for when a disaster threatens, during the event and provides a guide to initial stages of recovery before the recovery plan takes over. The procedure will be governed by your specific location and the nature of objects but should outline the response to any emergency situation – anything from storm damage to a bomb scare. Hard copy of plans should be kept in an easily accessible secure location, available for use if required and a copy should also be kept off-site.

Initial response

In the light of your risk assessment, you should draw up effective plans for dealing with the first critical stages of any emergency. Use emergency response and evacuation procedures to prepare location specific procedures and draw up an emergency contact list.

Situation assessment

The most important task is to preserve the safety of people in the building and responding to the disaster. It is essential to ensure no one enters the building while it is unsafe and an initial situation report should be undertaken. Once it is safe to enter the building damage needs to be assessed to try to stabilise the situation.
