Holiday checklist

Your essential guide to avoiding stress before you go

We all look forward to going on holiday; it’s an exciting time with lots of preparations to be made. We’ve put together a handy holiday checklist to take the stress away from holiday planning so you can relax knowing you have everything covered before you go. You can find more information on preventing water damage while you're away in our PDF guide here.

7 things to check before you go on holiday

When your holiday is booked you can begin to prepare by doing the following:

ticks Find your passport and check it is in date and has any visas you may need.

ticks Start a holiday folder to collate all your important travel documentation e.g. tickets, visas, hotel details, insurance.

ticks Organise your travel money.

ticks Pre-book your hire car to save money.

ticks Take out travel insurance and get a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) if you are going to Europe.

ticks Check your vaccinations are up to date.

ticks Organise care for your pets while you are away.

The week before your holiday

Don’t leave everything to the day before, to save time you can do the following in advance of your trip

ticks Investigate your baggage allowance, if you need to take extra luggage it’s possible to book it in advance.

ticks Check your route to the airport and pre-book a parking space.

ticks Cancel any home deliveries e.g. newspapers, groceries and milk.

ticks Tell your bank before you go abroad and take an emergency phone number to contact them, just in case.

ticks Tell a trusted neighbour or friend you are going away; leave contact details with them, and spare keys and the PIN number for your alarm if appropriate. Ask them to regularly check the house and remove mail from behind your front door.

ticks Don’t promote the fact you are on holiday on your voicemail message or on social media or by telling a taxi driver how long you are going to be away for.

The day you go on holiday

Your departure day is here, there are just a couple of things to do before you set off for a relaxing break.

ticks Make your home secure, double and triple check doors and windows, remove keys from the locks and hide them.

ticks Put any valuable items, jewellery, store cards etc. and documents into the safe if you have one or lock them somewhere hidden from view if not.

ticks Unplug electrical devices that do not need to be on, remember to leave your fridge freezer on.

ticks Turn off the gas.

ticks Locate and turn off your stop cock – for more information on preventing water damage in our PDF guide here.
