Beccles Lido is an open-air swimming pool on Puddingmoor, in the Suffolk market town of Beccles. Facilities include a 30mx15m pool, separate toddler and paddling pools, making it ideal for all the family. Beccles Lido Limited was set up by the community to save the pool following years of neglect and lack of use. Having successfully raised the money to rescue the pool, they are now fundraising to invest and secure its future.
Since acquiring the Lido from the local council, the team have turned it around to make it profitable. Over the course of a decade, the team have improved various aspects including replacing old toilets, refurbishing the smaller pools, upgrading the plant room and installing a children’s adventure play area and outdoor exercise equipment.
The team now need to raise £500,000 to refurbish the main pool and to upgrade and resurface the approach road and car park. Through bringing the Lido back into use, they have created 40 new jobs and firmly established it as a community space.
Shaun Crowley, Director of Beccles Lido, explained: ‘While £1,000 seems like it might make only a small dent in the remaining target, this couldn’t be further from the truth. Large grants will only support projects that can demonstrate significant community support and prove that they’ve exhausted other grant opportunities. Ecclesiastical’s donation has played a huge part in securing a further £300,000 in larger grants towards our £500,000 target.’
