The Wight Brainy Bunch

South East

Registered Charity Number: 1177562

About the charity

The Wight Brainy Bunch was set up by firefighter Mark Grimes and his wife Kathryn, both from the Isle of Wight, following Mark’s diagnosis with a brain tumour in 2015. Their ambition is to raise money for the Brain Tumour Charity, The Fire Fighters Charity and The Wessex Neurological Centre, through various fundraising events. They also offer advice, support and financial assistance to families from the Isle of Wight who are dealing with this devastating disease.

Together we've helped

The Wight Brainy Bunch supports patients, their family members and carers in a variety of ways, including: providing funding towards: travel for treatment at the specialist unit in Southampton; the purchase of specialist equipment; counselling and cognitive therapy; physiotherapy to aid rehabilitation; memory-making days out and short breaks for those with a terminal diagnosis.

Every year, 16,000 people are diagnosed with a brain tumour. There are 120 different types of brain tumour, making diagnosis notoriously difficult, yet they receive only 1-2% of national spend on cancer research.
Kathryn Grimes, co-founder of the charity, said: ‘As a small charity, all of our funding comes from our own fundraising events, so donations such as yours are really very important to us.’
