St Peters Parwich helped by tidy sum

A Churchyard in a picturesque Peak District village benefits from Trust130 donation.

Grass being cut in churchyard

St Peter’s Church is in Parwich – a remote, limestone-built village that nestles in the gorgeous countryside of the national park a few miles north of Ashbourne in Derbyshire, and which is very popular with walkers and other tourists.

It’s a lovely church, but the ageing congregation has been struggling to keep the graves neat.

Treasurer Stuart Chambers said, ‘We’re all getting on a bit and there are fewer of us attending church now – with people having unfortunately got out of the habit, particularly during the pandemic, we can have as few as five or six people at services.

‘If you’re short of numbers it’s a big job keeping everything ship-shape. I have a ride-on mower, but you can’t get to the actual graves on that so inevitably they can look a bit unkempt, which is a real shame.

‘This donation from Ecclesiastical was a complete surprise and was very welcome – it will help us to pay a chap to help out with his Strimmer, which is the only way you can really get at the grass and weeds around the headstones. Trust130 is a really great scheme – I will definitely be looking at switching to Ecclesiastical when my existing policy runs out.’
